AV@B
  1. AV@B Mobility

    Self-driving rides across campus.

Mobility takes the code from every division and puts it on vehicles people ride in. Scroll to follow the path from a simulator to a ride you order from your phone.

  2. 01 · Simulation

    Every mile starts virtual.

Berkeley Driver drives simulated campus streets first: crosswalks full of students, bikes, scooters and delivery trucks. A change only moves on once it holds up in simulation.

  3. 02 · Small robots

Then onto real paths, small and slow.

The same software runs on small robots on campus walkways. They are cheap to build, safe around people, and teach the stack about real sidewalks, curbs and crowds.

  4. 03 · Golf cart

Our first vehicle you can sit in.

A drive-by-wire golf cart carries people at low speed in controlled areas. It is where the stack learns braking distances, passenger comfort and how to share a path.

  5. 04 · Ride capsules

    Vehicles built for campus.

Next come purpose-built vehicles: small enclosed capsules for one or two riders, designed around the paths and plazas of the Berkeley campus.

  6. 05 · The service

Order a ride from your phone.

The end goal: open the AV@B app, pick a golf cart or a capsule, and ride across campus. Small, unobtrusive sidewalk robots carry packages and food the same way. All of it safe, approved and geofenced to campus.

How a ride would work

A concept for the campus service we're working toward. None of this is running yet.

    Arrive

Step out at the door. The vehicle heads off to the next rider.

The fleet

Three kinds of vehicle, one software stack.

Golf cart rides

Shared rides for up to four people between campus stops, like Sproul Plaza to Soda Hall.

Capsule rides

Private one- or two-person rides in small enclosed vehicles, ordered on demand.

Robot delivery

Small sidewalk robots that bring packages and food to your building without getting in anyone's way.

Safe

Every phase proves the stack before the next vehicle.

Approved

Carrying people only happens with the right approvals.

Geofenced

The service runs inside a defined area on campus.

The goal is a vehicle on campus that students can point at and say:

We built that.
